On Cloud Nine

Before the advent of adding machines and calculators, even simple arithmetic was difficult. People forced to wrestle with multiplication and division developed special admiration for the number nine, believing it was the most powerful single-digit number.

This view may have been a byproduct of reverence for the Holy Trinity, since nine is three times three. As late as the Victorian Age, a person sporting the finest possible outfit was often described as being “dressed to the nines.” Tradition having asserted that clouds exist in a series of successively higher layers, it was logical to label the ultimate height as cloud nine.

A victorious contestant or a person suddenly made exuberant seems literally to be soaring in the clouds. Naturally, therefore, someone who hits the ultimate joy is still likely to say, “I’m on cloud nine!”
